Facebook Portal wants to enhance your video calling experience. Facebook has produced its first-ever “branded” hardware device that is aimed at improving your experience. On Monday, the social-networking giant introduced a fresh line of voice-activated home speakers that brings you closer to your friends and family.
According to the company, people use video calls for around 1.5 billion minutes each day. So, Facebook wants Messenger video chats to be more conversational.
Dubbed Portal, the new device has been designed to increase convinces of video calls. The Portal uses an AI-powered camera to pan, zoom and reframe the picture. There’re two options: the Portal offers a 10-inch display, while the Portal+ has a 15-inch display that can be rotated between portrait and landscape modes. It can receive users’ commands like “Hey Portal,” and it also includes Alexa-powered artificial intelligence software. The device eliminates the need of holding the mobile phone, allowing you to be hands-free. So, you can freely chat with your friends and family and even use your hands to show the items.
You can make a call on Facebook Messenger using Portal, even if the other person doesn’t have a portal. It has the ability to handle seven people at once in each call.
Preorders are also available from Facebook. The smaller Portal starts at $199, while Portal+ being priced at $349. These will soon be available at other retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. Facebook is offering $100 saving on the purchase of a combo that includes both Portal and Portal+.
